Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is delivered inside specialized pressurized chambers designed to increase oxygen levels in the body. The two main types of hyperbaric chambers are monoplace chambers, which treat one patient at a time, and multiplace chambers, which can treat multiple patients simultaneously. Understanding the differences between these chambers helps patients and healthcare providers choose the most appropriate treatment environment.
Understanding the Different Types of Hyperbaric Chambers
Not all hyperbaric chambers are the same.
There are two main types: monoplace and multiplace. While both involve breathing oxygen under pressure, the design, strength, and medical capabilities can be very different.
At Hyperbaric Centers of Florida, we use medical-grade chambers designed for true therapeutic results. With over 25 years of experience, we have safely treated patients ranging in age from just 7 months old to 97 years young.
Monoplace Chambers (Single-Patient Chambers)
Monoplace chambers are designed for one person at a time. These are the clear, hospital-style chambers most people picture when they think of hyperbaric therapy.
Medical Hard-Sided Chambers
These rigid chambers are made of strong, transparent materials and are used in hospitals and advanced medical facilities. Inside, patients relax comfortably while the chamber is pressurized with 100% medical-grade oxygen at levels prescribed by a hyperbaric physician.
This higher pressure allows oxygen to dissolve more deeply into the bloodstream, supporting healing at the cellular level.
This is true medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Soft-Sided or Portable Chambers
You may have seen inflatable or “bag” chambers advertised online or used in sports settings.
These chambers were originally designed for emergency altitude sickness situations. They provide only a mild increase in pressure and do not deliver 100% oxygen.
Because of their limited pressure and oxygen capabilities, they are not equivalent to hospital-grade hyperbaric therapy and do not provide the same therapeutic effects as medical chambers.
Multiplace Chambers (Group Chambers)
Multiplace chambers are larger rooms designed to treat several patients at once, typically between 2 and 20 people.
The chamber itself is pressurized, and patients breathe 100% oxygen through a mask or hood system while seated comfortably.
These systems are commonly used in large hospital settings.
Why Experience Matters
Hyperbaric therapy is not just about getting inside a chamber. It is about proper pressure levels, oxygen delivery, safety protocols, and individualized treatment planning.
At Hyperbaric Centers of Florida, we bring more than 25 years of hands-on clinical experience. We have cared for patients across generations, from infants to seniors, always with physician oversight and strict medical standards.
When choosing hyperbaric therapy, the type of chamber and the expertise behind it make all the difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Monoplace chambers treat one patient at a time and are filled with pure oxygen, while multiplace chambers treat multiple patients simultaneously using oxygen masks inside a pressurized room.
Yes. Monoplace chambers are widely used in clinics and hospitals and are considered safe when operated by trained hyperbaric technicians.
Hospitals often use multiplace chambers because medical staff can enter the chamber and treat multiple patients simultaneously.
