So, What Is Hyperbaric Wound Care?
You sit in a pressurized chamber and breathe 100% pure oxygen at pressure levels higher than the normal atmosphere, usually around 2.0 to 2.4 atmospheres, depending on what’s being treated.
Most stubborn wounds stop healing because the blood supply to the area is damaged. Could be diabetes destroying vessels over years. It could be radiation from cancer treatment. Whatever the cause, the tissue isn’t getting oxygen, and without oxygen, nothing heals. New blood vessels won’t grow. Cells that rebuild tissue can’t do their job. Infection takes hold more easily.
HBOT pushes oxygen into that tissue at levels no other method achieves. Not topical treatments. Not oxygen masks. The pressure forces oxygen to dissolve directly into the plasma and reach places that normal circulation simply can’t reach.

Who Actually Needs This

Diabetic foot ulcers are the most common situation. Medicare covers HBOT when the wound is connected to Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, is Wagner Grade III or above, meaning infection has reached bone or deeper tissue, and when standard wound therapy hasn’t worked adequately. Healing progress gets documented every 30 days.
Radiation tissue damage is another well-supported indication. Cancer radiation slowly kills blood vessels over time. Years later, the area won’t heal from anything. HBOT helps grow new vessels into that damaged tissue. It’s one of only 15 wound conditions Medicare formally covers.
Skin grafts or flaps failing to take. Crush injuries where circulation was cut off. Certain bone infections not responding to antibiotics. These are the other situations where clinical evidence is solid enough to change our recommendation.
A 2018 study pulling data from over two million wound cases showed patients with Wagner Grade 3 or 4 diabetic ulcers who completed a full HBOT course healed at a 75.24% rate. Without HBOT, that number was 56.04%. When amputation is being discussed, that difference is significant.

What the Process Looks Like
